Virgo is the harvest sign: sort the crop, keep what is good, name what is wrong with the rest. A planet here works by improvement — it approaches whatever it touches as a craft to be learned and a proportion to be corrected.
This is Mercury in its working clothes rather than its talking ones. Mutable earth adapts the method rather than the goal, which is why Virgo placements are so useful and so hard on themselves: the same eye that catches the flaw in the object catches it in the person holding the object, and does not always know when to stop.
