An opposition puts two planets at opposite ends of the chart, in signs that are each other's counterweight. Unlike a square, the tension is legible: you can see both sides, which is exactly why it tends to get externalised.
The classic pattern is projection — living one end and meeting the other in other people, repeatedly, until the pattern is recognised. Worked with, an opposition becomes the widest field of view in the chart, because it is the only aspect that holds two full positions at once.
